In 2022, The Government of Malawi and UNCTAD signed a technical assistance project funded by the World Bank for the upgrade to ASYCUDAWorld v.4.3.3. The objectives of the project are trade facilitation and encouragement, trade costs reduction, customs revenue increase and improvement of trade statistics collection.
This version aims at improving risk management through bespoke selectivity and economic operators profiling; interfacing the system with COMESA’s cargo tracking system, banks and government agencies; integrating valuation control to identify under- and over-valued declarations; Integration with the Bureau of Standards (MBS); and implementing e-payment for collection of MBS fees among other things.
ASYCUDAWorld 4.3.3 was rolled out successfully on 20 October 2023 in Blantyre by the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) with the assistance of UNCTAD’s ASYCUDA Programme.
President of clearing agents at Dedza Border, Hastings Mpambira, has hailed the updated the system, saying it will hasten clearing services between imports and exports at the border. He added the system is important because it will save time and hasten service delivery.
MRA Station Manager at Dedza Border, Lucy Chikhawo, said ASYCUDA is among others used by MRA to process imports and exports, as well as help customers to declare goods that come into Malawi.
Station head at Mchinji Border, Tapiwa Mzunga, commented “it was truly impressive to have a fully operational system just a few days after the transition”.
