The ASYCUDA Programme joined Directors General of Customs from Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire and Niger to work on assessing the interconnection of customs systems within these countries under the ECOWAS’ SIGMAT (Regional Customs Network for Transit Trade) project. In these countries, the implementation of SIGMAT has been done through ASYCUDA. Joining the assessment meetings were representatives from ECOWAS, the World Bank and the Government of Togo.
Following the successful implementation of the SIGMAT regional transit solution interconnecting the customs systems of Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire and Niger, the steering committee discussed technical preparations and requisites for the extension of the solution to all ECOWAS Member States.
The SIGMAT project is working to connect national customs offices in the ECOWAS region in order to facilitate the regional transit of goods, and thus increase the pace and ease of international trade – particularly in landlocked developing countries (LLDCs). For the moment, only ASYCUDA user countries have implemented SIGMAT.
ECOWAS has 15 Member States and 12 of these currently run ASYCUDA software, i.e., ASYCUDAWorld, which highlights the technical potential for growth in regional interconnectivity via SIGMAT, in collaboration with the ASYCUDA Programme.
