In January 2022, Tonga was devastated by a massive volcanic eruption and subsequent tsunami, with 20m high waves hitting the archipelago. An underwater fiber-optic cable that connects the country to high-speed internet was severed and remained offline for two weeks, making the emergency response even more challenging.
The international community came together to support Tonga as it responded to the emergency and began to recover from the disaster. Just over six months on from that date, on 1 August, Tonga customs successfully launched UNCTAD’s ASYCUDAWorld customs management system.
Funded by the Governments of Australia and New Zealand, under the Pacific Agreement on Closer Economic Relations Plus (PACER Plus) project, the launch of ASYCUDAWorld will help modernize Tonga’s customs administration, automate customs clearance processes, and improve the country’s ability to engage in international trade.
Using ASYCUDA software as a service (SaaS) ensures that the system remains online 24/7 and provides Tonga with a disaster resilient, cutting edge, customs management system that will help the country to grow as it recovers economically from both the impact of the Tsunami and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Tonga also finds itself in good company, joining Pacific Island neighbours Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Kiribati, Tuvalu, and the Cook Islands in implementing the ASYCUDAWorld customs management system.
